ABSTRACT

Transient acute elevations of intraocular pressure occur following many ocular surgical and laser procedures. These intraocular pressure spikes, although well-tolerated in healthy eyes, may cause progression of nerve fiber damage and visual field defects in eyes with glaucoma and may lead to serious complications such as anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and retinal artery occlusion may occur in eyes with sclerotic vessels. In this review, transient acute intraocular pressure elevations seen early after ocular surgeries, except for glaucoma surgery and laser procedures, are being evaluated.
